For drawstrings on tote bags: 10mm, 12mm, or 17mm generally recommended.
For clothing: 7mm commonly for hoodies and waist strings, 10mm for overalls.
For key fobs & snap tabs: 4mm or 5mm.

I’ve used the smaller grommets for years on clothes but I recently ordered the 12mm rainbow grommets on bags and I am the biggest fan of them! The quality is amazing (no streaks in the rainbow finishing) and I get no scratches on the finish when using the matching dies. I’ll be ordering all the colors in 12mm as well!
