Size Guide
Choosing the Right Plastic Snap Size

Snaps are not one-size-fits-all.  If your snaps are too long for your fabric, they won't close properly.  If they're too short, they'll fall off. For this reason, it's important to choose the proper size / length for your material.

Which size works best for you will depend on a number of variables, such as the fabric you are using, its density and compression levels, how hard you are able to press, and your own personal preference.  For these reasons, we are unable to provide specific size recommendations for every scenario.

Dimensions of Size 20 Snap Parts

The 3 most commonly used sizes, in the order of popularity, are:

    1. Size 20 regular length
    2. Size 20 extra long (for thicker material)
    3. Size 16 regular length (for thinner material)

Size 20 (12.4mm or 1/2" cap diameter)

  • Size 20 Regular Length (5.6mm prong) is often used for lightweight to mid-weight fabric that isn't prone to tearing including baby diapers, menstrual pads, bibs, regular clothing, and household projects.   This is the most popular size of plastic snaps and is a good size to start with for most projects since most commonly used fabric fall within the desired thickness for this length. This size has a strong grip so if you're working with more delicate fabric at risk of tearing, consider size 16.

  • Size 20 Extra Long (6.2mm prong) is recommended for slightly thicker & denser material like double layers of standard marine vinyl for key fobs, medium weight leather, and chinese prefold diapers. (Some versions of these material may be so thick that they'll need larger/longer snaps.)

Size 16 (10.7mm or 7/16" cap diameter)

  • Size 16 Regular Length (4.6mm prong) is most commonly used for  projects that require a looser grip, such as doll clothes or reinforced stretch jersey.
  • Size 16 Extra Long is available in lengths ranging from 5.2mm - 7.2mm long for thicker material.

Size 22 (14.1mm or 9/16" cap diameter, 7.0mm prong)

  • A larger snap which can be used in similar situations as size 20 long-prong, or in situations where size 20 long-prong is still a little too short.

Size 24 (14.8mm or 9/16" cap diameter, 7.5mm prong)

  • Our largest, strongest snap which should only be used in very heavy duty applications with thicker material such as canvas tote bags, nylon webbing, dense leather and thick jackets. Because the grip is so strong, it can tear through more commonly used fabric.
  • Size: 20 (12.5mm - 1/2")
  • Stem Length: Regular (5.6mm)
  • Finish: Glossy
  • CPSIA Compliant: Phthalate, Lead
  • 50 Sets. Each set includes 2 caps + socket + stud.

  • Clear males and females are not compatible with colored males and females.
  • Clear snaps are less pliable than colored snaps and may be too difficult for some to install using pliers.
  • Clear snaps are more brittle than colored snaps and may break more easily if installed with too much pressure (such as with a table press).
  • For the reasons above, clear snaps are   *not*  recommended for commercial applications unless rigorous testing is performed under your specific conditions.

It is true these are a lot harder to set with pliers than color snaps. I am having a 50% success rate. I snot sure why it didn't occur to me, but the snap being clear means the hole through the fabric is visible (making a dot in the center of each snap) and so are the tiny textured marks on the inside of the cap.

I used these on my FSL Bracelet. So far so good. I am planning to use these on embroidered clothes similar to paper dolls using cloth to snap to a cloth book or quilt. So far I like these snaps, I haven't problems, I also read the comments of the others and followed their advice.

I will be buying these again!

I love my clear snaps. That are just as easy to put on as colored and I haven't had one break yet.

I found that these snaps break/crack more easily when applying. I applied with the kam press. But after a few tries I was able to apply the correct pressure so they wouldn't break/crack. Reply from KAMsnaps: Thank you for your review. Clear snaps are a bit more delicate than our colored snaps so they require less force. Anybody purchasing these should be sure to read the full disclosures stated on the product page:

I see a few posts about these snaps not as good as the colored ones. I COMPLETELY DISAGREE. If applied with the press instead of the pliers, they are just as good or better. There are many projects where you just don't want the snap to be so obvious and these are the answer. Make sure you keep them on hand or you will wish you had. I love all the KamSnaps. There isn't a color you need that they don't have. Biggest issue with the snaps and clips is deciding which ones to start with and how long it will take to get all the colors they have. HAPPY SNAPPING!
